Discover the three key factors needed for intrinsic motivation.

The way leaders motivate people is changing.

"Reward and punishment" approaches are fast becoming outdated. New models give people the freedom to do work they enjoy and care about. Daniel Pink calls this "intrinsic motivation," and it's based on three key factors:

  1. Autonomy. People want to be in control of their own life and work. This means that, instead of being held back by rules and regulations, they are free to be creative and innovative.
  2. Mastery. People motivated by mastery seek to improve their skills through learning and practice, so they can fulfil their potential!
  3. Purpose. When people don't understand the "bigger picture," they can become disengaged and demotivated. But, when they believe they're working toward something larger than themselves, they are often more hard-working, productive and engaged.
